Sometimes it is not easy finding a suitable apartment or house on the private market in Stuttgart. You can look for suitable accommodation, for example, on the Internet, in daily newspapers and advertisers or through flat-sharing agencies.

Rent Allowance (Wohngeld)

People with low incomes can get a subsidy for housing rent, the so-called rent or housing allowance. In principle, anyone with a low income can submit an application and hand it in at any housing allowance office.

What do you do with waste?

In Stuttgart there is a grey bin for residual waste, a green bin for paper and a brown bin for bio-waste. Plastic and packaging are placed in "yellow bags" that are available from the Citizens' Service Centre and some supermarkets.

Waste and yellow bags are picked up on specific days. Stuttgart municipality will provide you with a waste calendar informing you of the respective collection days in your residential district (unfortunately this is not available in English).

Additional charges

Residential rent is made up of several components. The basic rent is a fixed amount for the use of the space. Additional charges are incurred, for example, for water, heating or administrative costs. These are generally charged annually based on consumption.

You need to register with one of the many electric utility companies for the supply of energy. These utility companies have very different prices. Comparison sites on the Internet will help you to find a cheap deal.

You are also free to choose the supplier for landline telephones and Internet connections.

Radio and TV licence fee

The licence fee is a legally prescribed contribution for citizens, companies and institutions as well as for public interest bodies. For private households, the current fee is 18.36 euros per month.

The contribution serves to finance public broadcasting service based on a contributory model. Contributory means that in principle all adult citizens in Germany should make a contribution – regardless of their actual media use. In this way, everyone can benefit from the variety and quality of the freely available public broadcasting services

However, only one person per apartment must be registered and pay the radio/TV licence fee.
