EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is an independent residence permit enabling the holder to engage in highly qualified employment. It was designed to make the immigration of qualified skilled workers easier and more attractive. You can apply for an EU Blue Card if you have a university degree recognized in Germany.

Temporary Residence with a Blue Card

Highly qualified foreign citizens wishing to pursue employment in Germany that corresponds with their qualifications can obtain an EU Blue Card.

The EU Blue Card is only issued initially for a maximum of four years. If your employment contract is for a period of less than four years, you will obtain the EU Blue Card for the duration of the employment contract plus three months.

If you have held an EU Blue Card for less than twelve months, you must inform the Immigration Office of your change of employment. The twelve-month period begins when you take up employment. Periods of employment that have already been acquired outside the period of validity of the EU Blue Card can be included in this twelve-month period. The Immigration Office can also refuse the change of job retrospectively if the requirements for the issue of the EU Blue Card are not met.

If you have held an EU Blue Card for more than twelve months, you do not need permission from the immigration authority to change jobs. You also do not need to inform the immigration authority. The requirements for obtaining an EU Blue Card must be met each time you change jobs. Taking up self-employment is still not permitted.

Note: If you have been in skilled employment for over 33 months as EU Blue Card holder and have basic knowledge of German (A1), you can apply for a settlement permit. This period is reduced to 21 months if you have adequate knowledge of German (B1).
